Audrey Assad, a name I am not too familiar with until recently. Nevertheless, beautiful, soft and pure are the words to describe this 27 year old, Jersey born newcomer. Don't let that fool you though, she has already worked with some of biggest names in Christian music, some which include Chris Tomlin, Jars of Clay, Brandon Heath, tobyMac, Matt Maher and many more.
After listening to The House You're Building, I found that there are some similarities with that of Brooke Fraser and Bethany Dillon. Yet, I found myself relating to Audrey's music a bit more. She creates more of a worship-type mood and I found that through her brokenness, she was able to create lyrics that build effortless anointing in her vocals that, it almost makes you want to cry. It's truly beautiful!
Audrey says, “The record is about faith. It’s about the cross and fear and pain and how God is carrying me even though sometimes it doesn’t feel like it". “Marshall (producer) pulled things out of me emotionally that I don’t think I’d ever accessed, making me realize that every time I sing these songs, I have to channel my pain and walk through it… That’s been my journey the last few years, learning to believe that and walk in that acceptance of God choosing me. That’s what my journey will probably always be. The first reason I write songs is to preach to myself.”
One of my favorite songs off this album definitely has to be, “For Love of You”. This song is basically saying, Because of You, Jesus (Lord) I am who I am. I am where I am. This is me because of You who is in me. I didn't get where I am, or who I am because of my own efforts but because of You who is light in this dark world. It's a scary place when we forget that. To me, this song stands as a reminder that God is saying, “Hey! Remember me?! The one who even gave you those talents and the air you breathe everyday!”
Closing Thoughts This album is much more than just music and lyrics. This is an album that tells the story of being broken and then finding the healing hands of God.
