Israel Houghton is back with his new album "The Power of One" which releases March
24, 2009.  This eighth album from Houghton was packed with surprise artists such as:
Toby Mac, Mary Mary, Chevelle Franklyn and others.

Houghton decided to take a different approach when making this album.  “This is the
first time I’ve entered into a project with no premeditation,” says Houghton, whose last
album, A Deeper Level was awarded a Grammy following its 2007 release.

“In the past I’d go into a project saying we need this kind of song here and that kind
there – worrying if it would sell or if the Church would accept it,” he noted in his
announcement of the new project. “This time it was fun to go into creating a record with
no rules and just do what was in our hearts.”

The most reoccurring theme in this album is God surrounding us.  He will never leave us
or forsake us.  No matter what we do He is always by our side.  That's true love.  The
first time I heard "Surely Goodness" there was a part that got to me.  It says "I worship
You as a lifestyle / And now Your grace for me is overtaking me / No possibility of ever
letting go."  Worshipping God shouldn't be something we do, but a way of life.  When
we go to work, the grocery store, ball games, or anywhere we should live a Godly
lifestyle and others should just see it glowing from us.

"The Power of One" is another song on this album.  It teaches us that all it takes is
ONE.  I don't believe I have ever put entire songs lyrics in a review, but this song is
real.  Here are the lyrics...

“What if it all depended on me / To change the world / To change the world? / What if
my only responsibility was to change the world / To change the world? / Let me be the
one / To start a revolution / Let me sing my song to the people of the world / It all begins
with.

Chorus:
One the power of One / Joining the hundreds of millions of People believing in One / The
power of One / Don’t hand around / Stand up or sit down / It all begins with One.

What kind of love can conquer disease / And change the world. / And change the world?
/ What can I do to make poverty history / And change the world / And change the
world? / Let me be the one / To start a revolution / Let me sing my song to the people of
the world / To the children of the world / It all begins with... / Please don’t turn away /
Let your voices rise / Put love on display / And make a difference now / I believe you
and me / Can make a difference now / Oh oh oh. It all begins with One.

As a singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Houghton has written or co-
written 11 CCLI Top 500 favorites, creating a canon of songs that have become
standards in houses of faith around the globe. He is also a worship leader at Joel Osteen's
Lakewood Church in Houston, the largest church in America.

Closing Thoughts:
I enjoyed this album.  Musically it is not my genre of choice but I still enjoyed it.  The
songs and passion that come out of this album is real.  God had a BIG hand in this.  I
enjoy hearing something as genuine as this as opposed to a band making an album to fill a
contract.  I am excited to hear and experience God through the worship led by Israel
Houghton and Chris Tomlin on their upcoming tour.  I pray that God continue to lead
and speak to Israel so that he can continue to use the gifts God has given him to witness
and lead others to Christ.
