Main Review The recent disconcerting dearth of new female talent in the Christian music industry finds a reprieve in Kerrie Roberts, a new pop voice who's bound to raise the stakes. Her self-titled album begins with a bold declaration in "No Matter What"; circumstances are not going to change her love for God. How relevant is that in a world spiralling out of control? The next song, "Take You Away" is Jesus's promise to be faithful and return to take us to a place without pain. (In case anyone wonders her motivation for believing in song #1)
"Beautiful To Me" is a song of appreciation and awe of God's ability to heal and restore. By the title I was expecting it to be yet another self-esteem booster for girls, but it surprised me. Focus is where it belongs. Regret for backsliding and a desire to repent is the substance of "This Love Doesn't Run". In it, Kerrie acknowledges her need to be saved from a messed-up life. "Savior To Me (Sing Glory)" follows, a beautiful worship song expressing gratitude that Jesus decided to be her Savior. "Maybe I'm Afraid" is Kerrie's mind trying to analyze the reasons why she's reluctant to let God come in. Nevertheless, she knows that if she does, her life will be changed forever. A good "at-the-crossroads" song that's a little faster than you'd expect. An anthem for those who don't fit in, "Outcast" also sounds a little like a Shania Twain song which shall remain nameless.
When all we've got left is the breath in our lungs and the still small voice in our heart, that is enough. "Keep Breathing" encourages us to persevere in the hard times because the story isn't over yet. I don't know how many times that can be said before we stop needing to hear it. "Unstoppable" reminds us that with the power of love, we can come back from anything, no matter how far we fall or are pushed. "Love Comes Down" is a comfort to those who've lost everything but haven't found what truly matters yet; Christ is the answer for all the ills of the world. And He always has perfect timing.
Closing Thoughts Kerrie Roberts' debut album is fresh, inspiring, and uplifting. It promises that hope is more than a flicker, and love is only a prayer away. Snatch this one fast, ladies and gents, before it flies right out of your hands.
