[ Writer's Closing Thoughts ]
All in all, ‘The Reckoning’ was a great album, but just like
some of the other albums released by Pillar, the only
problem I have come across is the message.  It doesn’t
always appear as obvious as some other Christian
songwriters.  But trust me, Rob Beckley has a heart set
after God and although some may not notice the
message portrayed here, I believe that this album will
minister to someone.  This album is not ‘Fireproof’, but it’s
own and for what it’s worth I think Pillar fans will be
impressed with the turn and direction the band takes with
the new material.
This is a retro review and was written prior to November 2007.

Pillar returns to top form with the release of their newest album ‘The
Reckoning’.  The follow-up to their successful 2004, ‘Where Do We Go From
Here’, will have fans pleased, and possibly jumping around with the new material
that the band has to offer.  The first glimpse of the new album appeared in the
form of a single, which was posted on the band’s MySpace page in July.
“Everything” had given off such a good vibe to Pillar fans, I had often
encountered people who were saying things like, “You’ve heard it already?  You
have to get me a copy!”  Note to the band: I kept it a secret!

Come October 3rd, the secret will be out and fans will get to hear the new
music, and some will be lucky enough to catch the band as they tour on the
‘Days of Reckoning’ tour with other heavies like Day Of Fire, Decyfer Down &
The Showdown.  After hearing the first track on the album in “Everything”, I
knew that the album would probably take a turn to the heavy from there.  The
song “Awake” started off with a bass-line reminiscent of Tool.  “When Tomorrow
Comes”, reminded me of the yesterday that we must forget.  With the
forgiveness of the Lord on our side with repentance, we have to look forward to
the new day.  Today is now yesterday.  As believers, we seem to at times forget
this and dwell on things we should have already forgotten.  One of the best
songs on the new album message-wise, in my opinion, would probably have to
be “Crossfire”.  It speaks volumes against the hypocrites and those who just
stand by and do nothing.  Listen to the last verse and you will know what I
mean.  Powerful words.  “I would take death before I deny You / I would cheat
death just to stand by You / I would fear death if I couldn't see You / I would
take death before I deny You / Death before deny”.  Which side of the fence do
you stand?  Fence sitters really bother me.

One song that stuck out on this album is the song “Sometimes”.  Wow, this
one seems really out of place among the other cuts on the record!  But change
is good.  I like it.  It sounded like some of the songs I remember hearing back in
the 80’s (Back in the day to you younger kids!).  “Wherever The Wind Blows” is
another song that caught my attention.  Seeking God’s will for one’s life, I think
in my opinion, would save us a lot of time.  Wherever God happens to place us
in our lives is where He wants us.  I guess for these guys from Kansas,
‘wherever the wind blows' would be a good term of explaining where God would
want the members of Pillar.  Good song, catchy tune.  I wouldn’t be surprised if
that song becomes a single sometime on AC radio.
