Main Review The first I had ever heard from The Martins was a song my wife had on a mixed CD back when we first met. The song, “Out Of His Great Love” was definitely a picker-upper song and from then on when I would see a new project or song, I would take a glance. For those of you expecting this to be like the ‘old school’ southern Gospel music from the groups beginnings might be somewhat disappointed to see that New Day has taken a huge turn to sounding more like what’s around in today’s contemporary Christian music scene.
Even for those music fans that aren’t really fans of groups that are either considered a) southern Gospel or b) have come from that scene in some point in time would still enjoy this project. From the open country-pop chords of “Love Enough” down through to the closing piano ballad track, “I Surrender”, there is something to like about this album. My favorite, which is definitely a song that has been quite popular lately is “Somebody Like Me”. The song was originally written by former FFH guitarist Michael Boggs and was first covered by Jason Crabb on his Grammy and Dove Award-winning debut album in 2009.
My other favorite is the song, “Tell Them That I Love Them”, which comes from the point of the view from a preacher about to conduct a funeral service. His prayer asks the Lord what he is supposed to tell these people that have lost someone. “Tell them that I love them / That I died to set them free / Tell them there’s an answer for everything they need”. Wow, what a song. “You’re So Good To Me” is another stand-out, with its upbeat track and overall thankfulness of what God has done and given us.
Closing Thoughts Fans of groups like FFH, Selah and Avalon would definitely want to pick up a copy of New Day, because it’s sure to resonate with people who need to hear a message of hope. The Martins do a great job of reinventing their sound and going the distance to bring a record with a great message that could easily stand up to the best the CCM has to offer.
